Richard Serjeantson is interested in the history of the natural and human sciences in Europe, and in their conceptual foundations, between the eras of Reformation and Enlightenment. His involvement in the Genius before Romanticism project arises in particular from his work on the history of "human understanding" in this period ('"Human Understanding" and the genre of Locke's Essay', Intellectual History Review, 18 (2008), 157–71), and on René Descartes's earliest philosophical treatise, the Rules for the Direction of the 'Ingenium'.

He is a member of the Faculty of History and a Fellow of Trinity College.

Richard was a Crausaz Wordsworth Fellow at CRASSH from October 2012 - June 2013.
