Abstract
This interdisciplinary panel discussion on Slavery & Freedom: Material and Visual Histories brings together researchers and curators from a range of backgrounds. Our speakers come from the fields of historical archaeology, museum science and natural history, and art history. Their research ranges from the archaeology of slave cuisine in the Caribbean, to the relationship between slavery and the field of natural history, and to slavery metaphors in 18th-century English print culture. In this conversation, chaired by historian Dr Sabine Cadeau, our panellists will discuss their experiences of object-focused curation and research across disciplines; their approaches to working with artefacts, object-specimens, and print and artworks; and their methods for communicating this research through museums, the media, and their teaching.
